Creating Restore Points in Windows
What is a Restore Point?
A restore point is essentially a snapshot of your system’s settings and files at a specific time. It captures the system files, installed programs, and registry settings. If you encounter issues after installing new software or updates, you can use the restore point to revert your system to the exact state it was in when the restore point was created.
How to Create a Restore Point
Step 1: Open System Properties
- Press the
Windows key
and type “Create a restore point” into the search bar. - Click on the “Create a restore point” option from the search results. This will open the System Properties window, specifically the System Protection tab.
Step 2: Configure System Protection
- In the System Properties window, under the System Protection tab, you’ll see a list of drives. Ensure that the drive where Windows is installed (usually C:) has protection turned on. If it’s not, select it and click “Configure.”
- Choose “Turn on system protection” and adjust the Max Usage slider to allocate disk space for restore points. More space allows for more restore points but requires more disk space. A setting of 5-10% is typically sufficient.
Step 3: Create the Restore Point
- After configuring system protection, click the “Create” button in the System Properties window.
- Enter a descriptive name for your restore point. This could be the date, the reason for creating it, or any other identifier that helps you remember the context.
- Click “Create” again. Windows will now create the restore point, which may take a few moments.
