Microsoft is bringing a broader set of artificial intelligence capabilities to OneDrive Web, giving Microsoft 365 Copilot users a more natural way to find, understand, analyze and work with files without having to open documents one by one.
The improved Copilot experience is set to begin rolling out as an opt-out public preview from August 24, 2026, marking another step in Microsoft’s effort to make Copilot a more deeply integrated part of everyday Microsoft 365 work.
The update is particularly significant for people who spend much of their day dealing with large collections of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs and other files. Instead of manually searching through folders and opening individual documents to discover what they contain, users will be able to ask Copilot questions in everyday language and have it help surface the information they need.
Microsoft says the preview will roll out worldwide through late September 2026, while general availability is planned to begin in late December 2026 and is expected to complete by the end of that month.
Copilot moves deeper into OneDrive
OneDrive has traditionally been the place where Microsoft 365 users store, organize and share their files. With this update, Microsoft is making it more than a storage destination by bringing Copilot’s file-focused experiences directly into the OneDrive Web experience.
The capabilities were previously available through expanded SharePoint preview experiences. Now, Microsoft is extending those experiences to OneDrive, creating a more consistent AI-powered approach across the two services.
For users, the change could make a noticeable difference in how they interact with their files.
Rather than thinking about exactly where a document is stored or remembering its precise filename, users can describe what they are looking for. For example, someone working on a project could ask Copilot to find files related to a particular customer, meeting, topic or recent activity.

For example, an employee working with a spreadsheet could ask Copilot to identify significant trends or provide a high-level explanation of the information.

Creating new work from existing files
Perhaps the most ambitious part of the update is that Copilot isn’t limited to finding and explaining existing content.
Users can ask it to create new material based on files they select or relevant Microsoft 365 context.
Potential outputs include summaries, FAQs, project overviews, reports, presentations, Office documents and dynamic HTML dashboards.
That creates a new workflow: instead of starting with a blank document, users can start with the information they already have.

Microsoft emphasizes permissions and governance
For organizations considering AI tools, productivity is only half of the conversation. Security, privacy and governance are equally important.
Microsoft says Copilot in OneDrive respects the permissions already assigned to users. Copilot does not give users access to files they couldn’t already access.
In other words, the AI operates within the existing Microsoft 365 security model.
Existing governance controls, including sensitivity labels, retention policies, sharing controls and access restrictions, continue to apply.
This is an important point for organizations because AI-powered search across company data can raise understandable concerns about information exposure. Microsoft’s approach is to keep Copilot grounded in the user’s existing authorization.
For actions that can modify content — such as creating, moving, renaming, sharing or deleting files — users will also be required to review or confirm the action before it is completed.
That keeps the user in the loop rather than allowing Copilot to make potentially significant changes without confirmation.
What administrators need to know
The update is designed to roll out automatically to eligible users, so organizations don’t need to take action simply to receive the feature.
The main group affected will be OneDrive Web users who have a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, along with administrators responsible for managing OneDrive.
However, organizations that want to control participation in the preview have an important consideration.
Microsoft says administrators can use PowerShell controls to opt the entire tenant out of the preview. OneDrive and SharePoint share the same tenant-level preview controls.
That means organizations cannot independently opt out of the Copilot preview for OneDrive while keeping it enabled for SharePoint, or vice versa.
IT teams may therefore want to review their existing AI governance policies before the preview reaches users.
A bigger role for Copilot across Microsoft 365
The OneDrive update fits into a much larger Microsoft strategy: putting Copilot closer to the information people already use every day.
Rather than forcing users to move into a separate AI application, Microsoft is increasingly integrating Copilot into familiar services such as OneDrive and SharePoint.
This approach could make AI more useful because the assistant is positioned directly alongside the files, conversations and work users already rely on.
The bigger question is whether employees will actually change their habits.
If users embrace natural-language interaction with their files, traditional folder navigation and manual document-by-document review could become less central to everyday workflows.
The rollout schedule gives organizations some time to prepare. Public Preview begins worldwide in late August 2026 and is expected to finish by late September. General Availability is scheduled to begin in late December 2026.
